Welcome to Tanglewood Farm.
Tanglewood Farm is a picturesque 20 hectare farm set alongside and
amongst 80 hectares of regenerating native forest - the tangled wood.
On the farm we have between 200 and 300 sheep, about 80 laying hens and bantams and 5 dogs. However, when asked what we have on our farm, I always say "sheep, chooks and weeds" because weeds make most of the work!.
Guided farm walks are available on
request.
Fresh eggs from our Happy Hens may be available for
purchase.
Our sheep are a mix of our “Tanglewood Specials“ and a Cheviot Stud.
The Specials are predominantly Perendale because we have found
Perendales largely fit our objectives - in a nutshell “very
productive sheep that create no unneccessary work.“
Our wilderness is a diverse and interesting collection of plants growing on a Karst (limestone sinkhole) landscape. We have an amazing range of primary native forest trees returning, indicating that there was once a diverse and beautiful forest here - and hopefully, there will be again one day.
Major tree species that have been noted are Totara, Kahikatea, Rimu,
Red, Silver & Black Beech, Matai, Miro, Cedar, Tanekaha, Southern
Rata, Broadleaf, Kamahi, Hinau, Pukatea, and even Tawa. Shrubs like
Ake-Ake and Kawakawa are a surprise, as are the Nikau palms. Tree
ferns are becoming abundant.
In a patch or remnant forest there are a number of large Rimu, m in
diameter, a giant Matai, m in diameter, pukatea and large Nikau, up to m
tall.
Guided Wilderness Walks are available
on request.
Off Farm, I offer Environmental Consultancy.
